Christian Societies on Campus

For the first issue of this year we, the editorial board of Christis, decided to give a review of all the different Christian societies on campus (around at the time). Each piece is written by representatives of the particular Society.

The Christian Union

The Christian Union is a society for evangelical Christians. Our aim is to love God and reflect His glory by:

C.U. meetings are arranged on a college and campus-wide level. Each college has several ‘Small Groups’. These groups are varied, depending on the people in the group. Small Group activities range from prayer and bible study, to outings and social events. Colleges also organise both regular and one-off events.

The main C.U. meeting is on a Saturday night at 6.15pm. These can be quite lively although an attempt is made to vary the style of the meetings. Each week is different but may include worship, outside speakers, drama, and numerous other activities. Everyone regardless of their faith is welcome to attend.

Meth-Ang

The Methodist-Anglican Society aims to cater for all Christians whatever their tastes in worship or backgrounds and so, to my knowledge, has never been comprised of purely Methodists and Anglicans (the last Chair was Presbyterian).

The aim of Meth-Ang was drawn out last year and goes something like “to promote fellowship and stimulating discussion between Christians of different religious backgrounds” but this is by no means all Meth-Ang is.

We have an official meeting once a week, which is either taken by a visiting speaker or by one of our members .This is followed by discussion over a cup of tea, coffee or squash after which half of us adjourn to the bar.

The life of Meth-Ang is far more than this though as we have many active members who don’t turn up to the main meeting. We have regular events happening all the time (trips, retreats, conferences, meals, prayer triplets) and have strong links with the Chaplains and other Christian Societies on Campus.

I would recommend Meth-Ang to all Christians, regardless of denomination especially those who enjoy fellowship and friendship with other Christians around them.

This term’s theme is “Communicating Faith”. Meetings are held every Monday, 7:30 in L/037.

Week 1: Introductory workshop on welcoming
Week 2: “One” the Christian Aid game
Week 3: Speaker — Richard Bolam from Fellowship Afloat
Week 4: Christian rock group “Keep In Step”
Week 5: Speaker — Rev Sam Randall, Gulf veteran
Week 6: Workshop on “How do others see us” lead by Chaplains
Week 7: Speaker — Angela Bailey Chaplain of Hull University
Week 8: End of term eucharist
Week 9: Christmas meal

Student Christian Movement

The Student Christian Movement offers an opening and challenging exploration of Christianity, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We meet on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in D/056.

Our theme this term is Liberation Theology and the speakers are very experienced in this very important aspect of Christianity.

All meetings are open to members and non-members alike and we encourage people to attend as many as they feel possible.

Term Plan:

Week 1: Christian Aid game
Week 2: Speaker — Sister Amadaeus (Catholic Chaplain)
Week 3: Jim Cotter talks on Gay Liberation
Week 4: Stephen Hancock talks about “Ploughshares, Prison and Christian Anarchism”
Week 5: Video “Cry Freedom” in More House
Week 6: Speakers — Jim & Jean Hasnip from “Open Doors”
Week 7: Rebecca Jones leads meeting on “Women’s Liberation”
Week 8: James Pitt talks on “Christianity and Liberation Theology”
Week 9: End of term Party

We feel that no review of Christis is nescessary as the copy you are reading speaks for itself (for more info see inside front cover).

Apologies to the Catholic Chaplaincy Society but when this article was compiled there was no knowledge of your existence.
