Dear CHRISTIS,

I have just enjoyed reading my copy of Christis issue 14, only to turn to the back page and find a “cartoon” (or should it be “advert”) that has motivated me to respond. What disturbed me was the punch line:

CHRISTIAN UNION — no other society looks like it or lasts like it.

Should this really have been printed in a supposedly independent magazine which claims no particular bias towards any one Christian society?

On the surface this is quite an innocent and amusing way to fill the back cover. However, surely it implies that the C.U. is “better than” (however that can be defined) any of the other Christian societies on campus. The last thing I want to do is to get in an argument saying we’re better than you because…etc. Each society has its strong points and every member of every society needs to acknowledge and respect the different roles each fills, without any derogatory remarks or prejudiced judgements, however slight they appear.

If as Christians we are to have any impact on this university campus, then we need to achieve and work towards greater degrees of Christian unity.

“Do your best to preserve the unity which the Spirit gives by means of the peace that binds you together”

Ephesians ch.4 v.3

Rachel Blackamore

P.S. I am a member of the Student Christian Movement (SCM) and am in a C.U. small group.

…er…um…embarrassed cough…

We, the Christis Editorial Board, failed to foresee that the cartoon in question could be seen as an advertisement for the Christian Union. Rather, we considered that it was something of a joke at the Christian Union’s expense. We sincerely hope we would not have printed this had we seen it as an advert masquerading in the form of a cartoon. Consequently, we totally apologize to anyone who has been disconcerted by this cartoon.
