“I formed you in the womb”
By the Choose Life group
The red — hot raging issue on campus — to live or die? Choose Life was accused of being a Catholic anti-abortion movement, yet it boast many members from many different religions and walks of life. How can we approach this issue? Christis brings you two viewpoints…
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today: I set before you life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants may live, in the love of Yahweh your God, obeying his voice, clinging to him.” (Deuteronomy 30:19–20)
Choose Life was formed to promote pro-life ideas. There is a need for Christians to unite and present a view on the sanctity of life. The aims of this society are to educate people on issues concerned with the sanctity of life, by providing pro-life literature; it is our aim to provide support for women in the university who choose to keep their babies. The society will also hold talks, discussions and show videos for members. These will also be open to non-members. The fundamental point of a pro-life group is to inform students in a university that all have a right to life.
Those who hold a pro-choice standpoint are in effect giving a human being the right to decide when life has value. No one except God should decide who has the right to life. Those who deny that the human foetus is a child, should consider the case of John the Baptist, who leapt for joy in the womb of Elizabeth at the approach of Our Lord in the Virgin Mary’s womb. How could John the Baptist have recognised Christ if John were just an undeveloped clump of cells? And is one to believe that John the Baptist recognised Our Lord as a non-human entity in his Mother’s womb?
Is abortion really in the best interests of women? From a humanitarian point of view; is an ‘operation’ from which most women can only walk away scarred and in need of counselling a solution? After all, it always involves one person dying! Legalisation is not the answer to preventing back-street abortions. Instead we need to get rid of the poverty which traps so many young mothers into making a ‘choice’ which affects them for the rest of their lives.
Choose Life disagrees with the Students’ Union because no financial help for pregnant women is offered, no information is provided on pro-life issues and finally no rights exist for those who adopt a pro-life standpoint.
“The word of Yahweh was addressed to me, saying: ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you came to birth I consecrated you; I have appointed you as prophet to the nations.’” (Jeremiah 1:4–6)
