Acomb Christian Fellowship

By Sharon Miles

Acomb Christian Fellowship holds one service on a Sunday morning which kicks off at 10.30 am. As it is on the other side of the city transport is provided, at a charge of $1 per head, in the form of a bus which leaves from under the library bridge at 10.00 am.

The congregation consists of about 140/150 people and covers all ages. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming; the structure of the service fairly informal and the emphasis is on biblical teaching. If there are any "extras" which need to be fitted into the service then it is the worship time that suffers; one assumes they have a strict time limit. This situation occurred last Sunday as two people had just returned from China and another couple were leaving mid-week for Israel - neither trips were holidays.

John Wilson, the pastor, preached a sermon taken from Nehemiah (I don't think I've ever heard anyone preach on Nehemiah before) and it brought home to me once again, just how applicable the bible still is. This book was written around 466 B.C. yet John Wilson used it to show the types of opposition we can face in our lives and how Nehemiah's response to opposition can help us to, not only overcome our problems but try and avoid them in the first place. The sermon became dialogue as he tried to involve the congregation; this allowed his warmth and humour to show through and revealed the quality of his relationship with his flock.

From the "Newsflash" it is obvious the church at Acomb isn't just an insular club but is reaching out to people of all ages; there are youth groups, homegroups, evangelistic meetings; especially to the Chinese population of York. It is also clear the church is very much a family. All in all, my only reservation is the minimal time given to worship but that is just really a matter of personal preference.
