It’s week 7, it’s too early to think about the end of term and going home, you’ve been stuck in York for a long time. You’re getting ready to face up to that huge end of term work mountain, even planning the last great revision push for your summer exams. What you really need is a good night to clear the system, get you ready for the rigours ahead. But what could that good night be? A tour of York’s pubs and clubs chased down with a kebab and chips? An evening with friends in Vanbrugh bar? Beer and skittles at the O.K. Corral? Been there, done that. Luckily there is something new happening in York on Saturday week 7, and everyone is invited. It’s going to be so good that it’ll go on right through till early on Sunday morning. So come down to York University’s all-night vigil, a night of Christian celebration, prayer, discussion, chilling out, silly games — you name it and it’s probably happening.
The plan goes like this. At 9pm on Saturday week 7 (March 4th) we will all meet together in L/036 for a short service, sing some songs, pray some prayers, say a few words and all that jazz. From 9.30 onwards there will be different activities happening, with people being free to choose between a number of different activities at any one time. It’s designed to be open plan so people can do what they want and take things at whatever pace they like. There will be prayer meetings, discussion group, a music group jamming away, a fair trade game, Taizé meditation, a mime presentation, prayer walks, midnight duck feeding, silly games, poetry, Bible studies, night prayer style Taizé worship, videos, egg painting, mass Twister, a Bible quiz and much more besides all that. It will be arranged so that there at least two things happening at any time so that people have choice as to what they can take part in, and if you don’t want to take part in anything for an hour or so never fear, L/036 will be open as a room for people to doss in whilst everything else is going on. All of this is going to build up to a Sunday morning service, starting at about 6.30am, which shall be constructed of the fruits of our overnight activities. The music group will lead us in our singing, some of the prayer groups will lead us in our prayers, the poetry group will offer up a poem or two, and so on. If the weather is good enough we’ll have the service outside and watch the sunrise. It should be groovy.
