There are a number of Chaplains at York, none of whom are called Charlie for obvious reasons. The three full-time Chaplains Jim, John and Tony work closely together as an ecumenical team as well as representing the Methodist, Anglican and Roman Churches. Jim and John are also on the staff of Heslington Church whilst Tony is the Prior to the Carmelite community newly established at More House. We are also fortunate to have part-time chaplains who carry particular responsibilities: Ruth Eillison is lay Baptist Chaplain, Harvey Dean is Chaplain to Free Evangelical students and Martin Biggs to Quakers. Andrew Jackson is the international Chaplain working with overseas students. You’ll find plenty of further details about us in the Chaplaincy handbook, the term card and the Student Handbooks but the best way of getting to know us is to say hello. Pop in to the office in Goodricke G/012 on a week day morning when there’s usually one of us about or expect to see us around campus. We’re quite happy to talk with anyone about anything sacred or profane, personal or political, work or the weather and all points in between.
If you fancy doing some thinking (!), the chaplaincy puts on various courses and speakers, details of which can be found on the term card: exploring faith in this way is both exciting and relevant, and for many people a real point of growth. If you have questions you’ve never dared to ask, issues you want to address or you simply want to dip your toe in theological waters, come along.
York has a vast range of churches, so there’s bound to be somewhere you can feel at home; do ask or come to us for pointers. There are also plenty of opportunities for worship in the University both within student societies and through the Chaplaincy. Of these, Night Prayer on Friday nights at 10:00 is unique to York (we think), and gathers us all together for readings, silence and Taizé-style prayer at the end of the week. Do try it out. Details of other services are in the handbook.
Hope to see you in the near future.
God blessing,
