It was part of my New Years resolution that once I returned to York I would go to York Community Church (look it’s Tang Hall to you and me) and so having said that I would write a church report I was committed to keeping my first New Years resolution for a very long time. True to my word I got out of bed before 11am for the first time this term and went along.
The church itself is situated in a community centre and by the time I got there it was very nearly full so I was forced to share a Mission Praise book and sit near the back. However I did not let this put me off, indeed I found the very smallness of the place provided a very friendly atmosphere and most importantly an atmosphere in which I could easily worship God. The service itself lasted about an hour and while it ran to a set format it was quite informal. The sermon was given by a Scottish man with a truly wonderful accent and unlike some preachers he was able to hold at least my attention for the whole time that he was speaking. The sermon itself, on God’s guidance, was relevant and his use of the overhead projector to show us a ‘checklist’ at the end was a nice little touch which gave us an easy way to remember some of the practical advice which he had been giving.
It would, however, be wrong if I did not tell you that I had an ulterior motive for going there, that being the free student lunch. Actually getting to the lunch seemed to be a bit of stand around and hope but it was well worth while. If nothing else it provides you with a large, healthy and free meal but for me it was more than that, it gave me the chance to get out of the university and spend some quality time with my fellow Christians and it also taught me how to play the new, and rather addictive, childrens game of Pogs.
All in all I could not praise this church enough, indeed the highest accolade which I think I can give it is to say that it was well worth getting out of bed for! The people were friendly providing a good atmosphere to worship God in, the teaching thought provoking and relevant and the lunch just excellent. If this all sounds to good to be true then go along and see for yourself, I think you might even see me there again. Services for all of you now planning to check out this church are as follows, 10am for communion, 11.15am for the family service (the one to go to for a free lunch) and 5pm for the evening service come Bible study, this I am assured finishes by 6pm so all of you feeling particularly holy could go to another evening service as well!
