… In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength …
(NIV) Isaiah 30 v. 15
As we approach Christmas and with Sainsbury’s having had their festive lines out since late September, we should try to establish a bit of quiet within our hearts. All around us people are rushing around; leaves being blown by a wind of what they ought’ to be doing. Everyone is busy baking cakes, buying gifts and writing cards, but to most people, it is just what they think Christmas is all about. They forget that 2000 years ago while the entire Roman world was rushing around for Caesar Augustus’ census, in the restful quiet of a manger, the newborn saviour of mankind was lying asleep. So, during advent, I think that we must all attempt to take a little time out from stressing about whether the Brussels sprouts will be overdone and just contemplate in quietness God’s most precious gift of Jesus.
We should join in and celebrate the salvation God has given us with great joy; it is indeed right to give God thanks and praise, but … some time should also be spent being prayerfully thankful. If we do this then we can trust that the God that has saved us will strengthen us and we will not need to worry about trivial worldly matters.
