Southlands Methodist Church

Sneaky Matt Stallabrass infiltrates another church for us …

I have been to many churches during my time here in York, ranging from very high Church of England with prayers of thanks for St Charles the Martyr (King Charles I) to the very happy clappy ones, yet none of them have felt quite like this one, for this one just felt like home.

This church on Bishopthorpe Road has about seventy to a hundred people at its morning service at 10.30am with the majority of them being a fair bit older than myself, however it is encouraging to see the large Sunday School. The service follows a fairly traditional order with hymns, prayers, Bible readings and a sermon from what seems to be a different preacher each week, though the sermons do follow a programme. Once the sermon is over the children come in from the Sunday School and tell the rest of the church what they have been doing and often sing for us or show us what they have made. I thought that this was a nice touch and a good way to help both adults and grown-ups alike see the church as one and interacting rather than split up into different age groups. After the service there is the opportunity to stay for coffee and a biscuit and just chat to people.

In short it is the kind of church that feels like home to me, following a pattern that I am used to and find unthreatening. If you are looking for a student church then this is not it (as there is just one other student besides myself) and if you go looking for a St Mikes then you will be disappointed, but if you do find yourself in the area and, like me, find that you feel just as comfortable with the more traditional patterns of worship then this is certainly worth a visit.
