Christis Comment Corner

It can hardly have escaped your respective notices that this is the term in which an awful lot of third (and in my department, fourth) years mope around looking really quite unhappy with their lot.

The symptoms are these:

  1. repeated bleating about some mystical date in June (often around the 10th or 11th).
  2. a slightly martyr-like expression when the subject of socialising is brought up in their earshot.
  3. herding instinct towards the upper floors of the J B Morrell after which long periods of inactivity may develop.
  4. slight tearfulness among the more sensitive members.

It is perhaps slightly rude of me to mock the afflicted. I am the proud possessor of no exams and not even any lectures this term (due to some skilful timetable arranging) and am therefore in no position to lecture the finalists on how they shouldn’t be panicking. It is easy to trot out glib phrases to those around me sitting their finals or even their end of year exams like: “It says in the Bible don’t worry, so don’t”, “Seek first God’s Kingdom and the rest will be given to you”, “Don’t fret because God’s got it under control”. It’s much harder to sit with a friend who’s terrified about next week’s open paper, to comfort someone who’s just stuffed up a really important exam or to offer support to a housemate who is genuinely unable to visualise life beyond the end of June.

It is really important both for people sitting the exams, and those who have to put up with them, that we are honest and share our worries. Jesus never told people to cheer up and get on with it. On the contrary, the Bible teaches us to “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” Romans Ch 12 v 15 . So for those of us have less pressure on them this term, let’s learn to recognise the above symptoms and attempt to help the poor suffering patients.

Dear all,

If anything in this paper gets up your nose and you wish to quibble (or rant and rage) about it then please write in to Comment Corner and lets have a good ol’ debate. Don’t sit there and fume … Please send your most wondrous ponderings to Christis c/o SU pigeon holes, one of the Committee, or just email us.
