Christian Aid Week feedback

The total raised during Week 3 for Christian Aid was £517.95, so thank you to all who contributed. This was raised principally through bridge collections — £389.98 — but the Rich and Poor Lunch, which was rather more fun than shaking buckets, raised an impressive £120 (the other cash was put in tins on Vanbrugh Stalls). Moreover, 695 signatures were gathered in the Jubilee 2000 quest to make Western governments cancel some of the Third World Debts, which surely means that at least 10% of the university was touched by our campaigning.

The fair trade tasting was a great success — not only were a number of people surprised to discover how good the chocolate tasted, but one of them persuaded the SU shop to stock a third brand of fair trade chocolate: praline at £1.90 a bar. Third World First are still collecting Asda and Sainsbury's receipts to present to the supermarkets as proof of our custom when requesting more fairly traded products — a box is available for these at the bottom of the stairs in the library.

Finally, the café crawls were not only most enjoyable but provoked some heartening responses. Café Concerto and Capaldis (by St William's College) were almost wholly negative, but Crumbles (Goodramgate), Mowbrays (Stonegate), James (Petergate) and the Blake Head (Micklegate) all seem worth encouraging with more café cards (or you could try asking the manager about it even if you don't have a card just to push the point). Best of all Café No. 8 on Gillygate already uses fair-trade tea and promised to try cafédirect. Anyone who wants café cards to help with this campaign, please e-mail me (jlc110@york.ac.uk).

WE CAN MAKE THE WORLD A FAIRER PLACE

Thank you for your help in Week 3, but this is only the beginning.
