Mark Ford: The Christis Ambassador to Germany and it’s Beer Gardens

The basic beer here is called Koelsch — it comes from Koeln and tastes exactly like Pils except it comes in smaller measures and doesn’t come from Pilsen. Personally I wouldn’t touch either with a barge pole as drinking from a glass of 0,2L, 0,3L or 0,4L doesn’t feel right, So as far as German Beer goes I tend to drink Weizenbier — which comes in four varieties: Krystall Weizen which is clear, served with a slice of lemon and tastes to me a bit like a McDonalds Vanilla Milkshake, except it is incredibly fizzy; then there is Hefe Weizen — that means Yeast Wheat, and is cloudy and if you drink to much you get a dodgy stomach — it tastes quite beery really unlike Dunkles Hefe Weizen — which is dark and tastes to me a bit like Ham! Finally they have the Bock Weizen which I had on Saturday, it is more than 8%, and tastes like a Banana Milkshake, these are all served in 0,5L glasses so still not up to the standard of a good old British pint. Finally there is the German Altbier which is as close as German beer gets to Bitter although it’s still too fizzy — so if you want a change you can always have a 0,4L of Guinness or Kilkenny form a lot of Pubs.
