Then God said ‘Let the land produce vegetation: seed bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruits with seeds in it, according to their various kinds.’ And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:11–12 (NIV)
Over the Summer I was lucky enough to have a little spare time to take a walk in a small woods behind my old sixth form centre. It is an area of waste ground that has been reclaimed by a local conservation group. Although near a busy main road, it is also secluded enough for no-one to really know that it is there unless they have been before.
I took this opportunity to just wander through and marvel at the wonders of God’s created world. Everywhere that I looked there was perfection, at times muddled and confused where different plant species clamoured for the same piece of ground, but always interacting as God had intended.
The final sentence of the above Genesis quote is: “And God saw that it was good.”. I always think that if God can see the wonder and the awe of his own creation then surely we should be able to. We can explain tiny portions of it through science (photosynthesis, for instance), but the whole is still something which is amazing, ordered, and unmistakably divine.
My message is this: in this freshers’ term, don’t give all your time to partying, or studying. Allow some time to strike a balance, go for a walk, or just sit and stare at the lake. Study and admire God’s creation, become at one with it, and give thanks to your creator.
