Lateral Thoughts — Time for a Change?

Time is a weird human concept that increasingly rules our lives more than spirituality. Is there an alternative?

At a time two thousand years ago, give or take, Jesus had his time taken up for forty days to be tempted by the devil in the wilderness. (Mark 1:12)

Would He have time for that now? Do we have time not to be tempted? Tempted, no that can wait for tomorrow. Can it? Better today. Today? I think better still, yesterday. Yes, yesterday. No time for it now. We have no time now.

We have less time: it is a scientifically unproven fact that there is less time now than then. Whenever then is. Who cares? We haven’t time to worry about then. Just look at the time. On the clock. On the other clock. On the watch. On the stereo, alarm clock, microwave, cooker, organiser, phone. We must know the time. Know the time, know how much time, know we have no time. Deadlines, that is what is important. Deadlines and money inextricably entwined in a strongly capitalist economy driven by perfect competition chasing short-run supernormal profits.

Stop.

Revive your spirituality by actualising your capability as a human to be spiritual. Take the time out. Take the time to consider what matters, even “what is time?” Perhaps to a human it is just a transient participation on Earth within God’s creation. Perhaps more, perhaps less. Who knows? But make the time to ponder.

Take time out from a short term economic morality to consider your long term personal spirituality. Refresh yourself with peace, prayer and tranquillity, through your time with God.

Make that change: make that time.
