The theme of the 1999 National Methodist Societies Conference was “Millennium: Looking Back, Moving Forward”. The workshops focussed on issues concerning the changes we currently see in our world, and what their future might be. Topics included Church and the Community, Social Justice and Jubilee 2000, Feminism and Women in the Church, Interfaith Relations, and Millennium Shock. A healthy attendance of around 70 people allowed for interesting discussion and fun-filled midnight gaming.
Saturday afternoon provided a perfect opportunity to tour York. Visits to the Jorvik Viking Centre, the brewery and organised tours of York itself were arranged. The conference also helped launch the 300 day count down of MAYC (Methodist Association of Youth Clubs) World Action’s “Life or Debt” campaign in support of Jubilee 2000. Contributions to the Jubilee 2000 campaign were made such as appeals to Tony Blair and to top it off, a photo for the Methodist Recorder (Thurs, March 11) was taken at Clifford’s Tower.
The AGM was lengthy, but successful. Possible MethSoc links to other countries, the merging of North and South Wales MethSocs (despite enormous geographical barriers) and the future of youth in Methodist churches were all issues of discussion. Though perhaps the most concerning topic was “What will we do without a MethSoc coordinator?” After listening to Julian ramble on the majority of people were starving and so enjoyed the delicious gourmet food provided by Angela and friends.
Numerous MethSocs competed in evening entertainment provided for us all after the AGM. In addition to the performances, extra entertainment was found in our confusion over what the prize trophy was and where it had come from (some believed it was simply new-aged artwork, others that the plastic apparatus was once used in a restaurant).
A group leadership workshop, and worship preparation for the Sunday service took place, after which a trip to the pub was enjoyed by all. The Sunday service, which focussed primarily on Jubilee 2000, was thoroughly enjoyed by the congregation at Central Methodist Church.
Overall, the weekend proved to be rewarding and enjoyable. Next year’s is thoroughly recommended!
