Here are the first two of the creeds we’ve been receiving after the request in the last issue. This is a subject that appears to have both inspired and confused people. Wandering about campus, I’ve received a vast number of different responses in conversation with people, including:
“But I’d only write the Nicene Creed — it says all I need to say!”
“I can’t stand the Nicene Creed — I can’t see that Greek philosophy is that relevant to daily life …”
“I never heard the word “Creed” before I read that article”
“I’d love to, but I’m not that sort of person/don’t have any time”
I’d just like to encourage many more people to write in — this is a real chance to learn what Christians at York think their faith is all about, and where they put the emphasis in a faith that can sometimes comprise so many different parts. It doesn’t matter if:
Hopefully people can see what the two people here have written and respond in some way. Interestingly enough, both these pieces of writing are very much about working out the relationship between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and their relationship with us. Also interesting, elements of Christianity that I know some people would put in don’t appear — there’s no mention of the Bible for instance, although both have obviously been written by people familiar with the Gospels at least, and there’s no attempt to wrap it up in deeply “theological” language. In fact, both people are generally — though not always — fairly lighthearted about it. Does this offend you?
Please do write in — we feel this is something that can add a real “interactive” quality to Christis, like the Thinker but in more depth and with more space for individuals, and provide both material for, as well as a counterpart to, some of the “weightier” issues we cover. Ta to all contributors!
Here are two declarations of faith for this issue …
I believe in a God so powerful he created the whole universe.
I believe in a God so dynamic he populated it with diverse life.
I believe in a God so sharing he created us specially in his own image.
I believe in a God so humourous he gave us ducks.
I believe in a God so fair he gave us the choice to ignore his will if we want.
I believe in a God so caring the Son was among us to show us faith.
I believe in a God so desperate to be with us eternally, the Son paid for our sins with death.
I believe in a God so supportive that when the Son was gone, he empowered us with the Holy Spirit.I believe in a God so loving, that he would do anything for us, and for whom there is no greater pleasure than having us come to him.
I am daft enough to believe …
In God That that God is both three and yet still only one
That these three parts can be called Father, Son and SpiritI am absurd enough to believe …
That the Son became a human and yet was still God
That that human and God chose to live beyond the reach of modern human history in a little known part of the world
- Unprovable
- Obscure
- Opressed
That at the end of that short life he suffered a horrible death, and yet lived again and was seen by othersI am hopeful enough to believe …
That God loves me, however much wrong I do the world or myself or Him
That God needs and wants people who are as daft and absurd as me, and who have done any number of wrongs to the world or themselves or Him
That with these people like me and including me, however many times they mess up, and however many times they misunderstand what “saving” means, God will save, and is already busy about the work of saving, the world, binding us all together into His Church with the Holy Spirit.
