In York in particular, it’s quite hard to escape the way that the constant background activity of worshipping communities over history has shaped the wider community in which we live. You can’t walk down a street in the town centre without seeing a historic church, for example. Or there may be those strange wild figures on street corners anxiously trying to persuade passers-by of the inherent truth of some doctrine or other. Whatever the case, people may well have a stereotyped idea of you if you revealed your membership of a specific religious or denominational group.

Here, we try to profile Christian activity in the town of York without prejudice. We’ve tried to be fairly impartial, whilst writing from the viewpoint of students who might not be directly linked to the group reviewed. If you're interested in seeing these communities at worship, whether out of mere curiosity or an intent to join in in some way, we've included contact email addresses so you can easily find a welcoming face there.

Whilst these are all reviews of Christian churches, it is important to bear in mind that a considerable range of other religious groups meet and worship in York. This cannot and should not be easily ignored or sidelined by intelligent Christians or any other people who are trying to be honest about the extent of multicultural religious diversity in our society. For introductions to Muslim or Jewish worship, contact the Islamic Society on the_islamic_society@york.ac.uk, and the Jewish Society on socs248@york.ac.uk. In other circumstances, the University chaplains should be able to provide contacts for those interested in introductions to groups not mentioned here (email ael3@york.ac.uk or grj2@york.ac.uk).
