Yes! The Biblical story of creation is merely a simplification. We understand that the world took many millennia to become as it is; then there was no concept of such lengths of time. “Creation” and “evolution” can be run parallel to each other — they simply have different time scales.
Yes, if you accept that the bible could (occasionally) contain those interesting things called ‘folk memory’, or even ‘myth’.
No. That suggests to me that neither might be entirely perfectly ‘true’.
No. That doesn't mean we should stop trying.
I’m not sure, but just because those who emphatically prioritise the bible over ‘current thinking’ may appear a trifle bonkers, there’s no reason to exclude them from the debate.
How many versions are there of the “biblical version”?
Yes. As a non-Christian, I can see remarkable parallels between the chronological sequence of events in Genesis, and those purported by modern scientific thinking.
Does it have to be?
Which biblical version of creation? — as I understand it there’s at least two rather different ones (Genesis 1 and Genesis 2).
Can the constant Christian obsession with the biblical version of creation be reconciled with a call to love our neighbour, and proclaim and live Jesus in the world?
Thinker responses should be no more than fifty words long and should be emailed to us at submissions@christis.org.uk, or put in our pigeon hole in the SU centre on campus.
