In its heyday, the British Empire controlled roughly one-third of the world’s land surface. Through missionaries and the building of churches, Christian leaders at the time felt able to spread the word to these far-flung parts of the planet. It appears as if they were pretty successful. The Christian faith, in its various shapes and forms, is the largest religion in the world. However, the Christian leaders are now losing the battle at home. I have just returned from a trip to the United States, where there has been a resurgence in believers since the tragic events of September the 11th. One woman at the church that I went to, whilst away, said that she had heard that England had ‘lost the light’. Is this really true? It pains me to see that Britain currently has the lowest amount of believers since censuses began. More people responded to a campaign to get ‘Jedi’ recognised as a faith, than said that they were Jewish. It is a tragic state of affairs, but all we can do is to continue about our daily lives, and speak the word as often and as loudly as we can, and hope that we can follow in the footsteps of those early missionaries, back here at home.
We have a rather small issue of Christis for you this time. There has been a lull in the number of articles and letters recently, and I encourage you to write if you can. All items submitted are considered equally, so if you think that you can produce something to go in the magazine, get working. You can submit articles at our pigeon hole in the Students’ Union office, or to our e-mail address: editor@christis.org.uk. If you think that you would like to help out reviewing items and producing the magazine proper, we meet at 1:15pm on Wednesdays, in Derwent College Room D/130. Hope to hear from you.
