Belief

I have often thought that if God really wanted us to live as he wanted he could have given us a much clearer set of instructions than the Bible. This collection of 66 books written by over 66 authors, originally in 3 different languages is the most widely sold and probably hotly debated books in history. There have been many different interpretations of almost all of it and yet it remains cental to Christian teaching and way of life. Two of our authors in this section look at different issues related to this, the inerrancy or otherwise of the whole Bible, and possible interpretations of the phrase ‘The Word’.

The other article in this section attempts to address what I believe is the answer to this problem. Faith. Without it the Bible is just a collection of writings, with it God’s perfect plan and care for humanity are revealed. And it is through prayer and faith in combination with regular Bible reading that God’s plan and desires for our lives can be discerned.

Life

“There are books, thousands of pages, about the power of one mind to change the Universe. But none say it as clearly as this.” — Delenn, about Japanese Stone Gardens in the Babylon 5 episiode The Gathering.

It is a common misconception that we are powerless to have any effect on the world as an individual. Lizzie Freear urges us to consider how powerful we are as individuals, and what we should do with this power. David Jones describes how we can overcome our insignificance through social action itself in his regular column ‘The Jones Files’. Lois Cross reflects on how the Christian Union made an impact on people during their annual Mission week, in ‘ONE WAY to Live’.

James Porter, however, would like to address how anyone can believe an interpretation to be infallible. Sit back with a nice cup of tea, and prepare yourself for a visit to the alternative reality of the FCCU.

It would be easy to disregard James’s words as just another unwarranted pop at the Christian Union. It would be nice to think that there is still something to be said for Christian Unity. Perhaps we should listen more carefully to the words, rather than disregarding them so readily. Meanwhile, Ruth Vonberg would like to share with us some thoughts that materialized while all she could do was listen, during a silent retreat to Mirfield.
