Welcome to Christis!
Welcome to York! This page aims to give a brief introduction to Christis — if you like what you see, or just want to find out more, please do come along to one of our meetings (Wednesday from week 2 onwards, 1:15 in D/130) or find us at Freshers' Fayre.
Christis is a society that produces a twice-termly Christian magazine. Our articles cover a broad range of topics — have a look at the past issues in our archive to see for yourself!
We meet every week to discuss articles/poems etc. that have been submitted, or themes that we need articles on. Our meetings are very free-flowing — we tend not to have a specific agenda, but talk about whatever needs talking about.
You don't have to be interested in writing to be involved in Christis! Of course, written submissions do form a large part of Christis — but there's more to the production of a magazine than simply the articles that go in it.
- Artwork: We love original cartoons or any other artwork, loosely on a religious theme or related to specific articles.
- Design: We need people to help put the magazine together. Don't worry if you've never used a computer for this sort of thing before — nor had we. (If you do happen to know how to use In Design, then that's a bonus!)
- Technical stuff: As you can see, we have a website that needs keeping up to date, and some vague technical knowledge is useful here. (We have recently re-written it, so hopefully it's not too difficult to maintain.) There's also a small amount of tidying up to do after the non-techy people — stuff like making sure the email inbox and disk quota don't fill up.
- Distribution: Whenever a new issue comes out, you can be among the first to get your hands on a copy by coming to a distribution meeting! We put piles of Christis in each porters' lodge as well as delivering to members' pigeon holes — and this takes much less time if more people come to help.
We hold our Annual General Meeting about half way through the Autumn term — this is when a new committee is elected. Our posts are: chair, treasurer, secretary, computing co-ordinator, editor, subscriptions & advertising, press & publicity, and a production team. Apart from the first three, these posts can be split or combined in any way you like. If you think you might be interested in holding a post, or want to be involved without being a post-holder, come to a meeting or drop us an email (socs90@york.ac.uk) to find out more!
You don't have to be a member to be involved in Christis. Our meetings are open to all and we welcome submissions from anyone.
The main benefit of membership is that you can have each issue of Christis delivered to your pigeonhole — thus saving the need for a mad dash to your nearest porters' lodge when you hear that Christis is available! Membership also gives you the right to vote in our elections, and supplies us with vital funds for producing this free magazine.
If you'd like to become a member, come and find us at Freshers' Fayre, or come to a meeting. Meetings are held every Wednesday from week 2 onwards, at 1:15 in D/130 (above Derwent college dining room).
If you'd just like adding to our mailing list, to be kept up to date with all the goings-on, please send your uni username (e.g. xyz500) to secretary@christis.org.uk.
If you've read all the way to the end of this page, then congratulations! You'd be well suited to involvement in Christis and we'd love to meet you!
